PSA: Freeze Your Credit, Please

PSA = Public Service Announcement


Data breaches are running rampant, for several reasons you may have read about if you keep up with consumer protection and data privacy news.


Note: Do not assume freezing one of your 3 credit reporting business accounts will automatically freeze them all, no matter what anyone tells you. Check each of the 3 credit reporting businesses - and they are all businesses, not public or government services providing only personal financial protection. They will try to sell you stuff - with really hard sell pitches, too. Do as you please, but first, bushwhack your way through the sales pitches and freeze your accounts. It is not difficult to unfreeze your account(s) when you need to apply for credit yourself, legitimately.


It also doesn’t hurt to place fraud alerts on your accounts. The ODOJ ID theft webpage, URL below, explains in detail what each of the fraud alert actions does:
