Announcements
Paul Leistner announced that the Division/Clinton Street Fair is coming July 28th from 9 a.m. to the afternoon.
Bruce Treat passed on a message from Bob Eckland, MTNA newsletter distributor, that we are losing two of the six captains, the people who coordinate the distribution of the newsletter. If these two captains are not replaced, we may need to explore other
avenues in the future such as mailing, coming out less often or being inserted into the Southeast Examiner. At worst, we may need to suspend publication until more
captains are found.
Bruce also asked that suggestions be sent to him on improvements to the website.
Presentations
Ben Cannon
Representative Ben Cannon and his assistant Christy Splitt visited to talk about
accomplishments in the last state legislative session. These included things such as creating a Rainy Day fund, trying to improve health care, banning smoking in nearly all workplaces and expanding the Bottle Bill. Rep. Cannon then took several questions from the audience regarding among other things, the liquor lobby and the Corporate Kicker.
Water Bureau
Susan Kelly, Patti Oliver and Gary Moore spoke about construction on upgrading water pipe infrastructure around 59th Street and in Mt. Tabor Park. Construction should begin in September on 59th Street. Generally work will be done on 59th Street before
construction begins in the park. Work will result in some temporary closures to park access and the Water Bureau will give as much advance notice as possible for such
closures. Construction will continue for about 18 months.
Parkside Deli
Colin Fisher of the Parkside Deli visited to talk about amending his liquor license so that patrons may enjoy a glass of wine with lunch or dinner. He took questions from the audience and some people said that they enjoyed his deli and welcomed him to the neighborhood.
Committee Reports
Land Use
Dave Hilts wrote a letter regarding tree cutting at the property near 63rd and Yamhill. Dave sent a letter to the City and was unhappy that he had not yet heard from them.
Dave also took a question about the lot at 60th/Belmont. He reported that no activity was happening at that location at this time.
Mt. Tabor Park Task Force/Public Policy Proposal
In John Laursens absence, Don Jacobson, Nancy Norby and Bruce Treat all took turns trying to explain how the Task Force (former mediation) sessions were going. Portland Parks and the neighbors disagreed about the order in which elements of the Mt. Tabor Park Master Plan should be addressed The next meeting will be sometime during the first three days of the week of July 23 and the last meeting will be August 13. All meetings are at 6:30 p.m. at the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church at 54th and Belmont.
SEUL
Paul Leistner reported that the same representatives were elected at the SEUL Board meeting in July. He also reported that training sessions for leadership for people of color will be offered in the near future.
Old Business
Hawthorne Entryway Project
Nancy Norby provided news of the upcoming dedication of the bronze plaque at 50th/Hawthorne that will occur on August 18th from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a 1 p.m. dedication. Raffle tickets will be sold to raise money for the plaque and the prize will be a print by local artist Molly Hilts. The drawing will be at the MTNA meeting on
September 19. The print will be on display at the Sapphire Hotel until August 18 and then at Bread & Ink after that until September 19.
Friends of Mt. Tabor Park
Nancy Norby invited everyone to the Friends annual meeting and potluck picnic on August 14 in the Park. She also asked for more newspaper bags for use in the dog park.
Tabor Commons
Paul Leistner asked about the possibility of including an envelope in the next MTNA newsletter asking for donations for Tabor Commons. Discussion ensued and some concern was raised by people about including envelopes asking for donations. Paul mentioned that Nadine Fiedler, who couldnt attend the meeting, had expressed
concern in a e-mail about the precedent being set by putting envelopes requesting
donations in the newsletter. Motion made by Dave Hilts and seconded by Lois Heying that on a one time only basis, an envelope may be placed in the next newsletter asking for donations for
Tabor Commons, which should be going out in August. Motion Passed.
Paul also reported that vandals had damaged the windows at the front of the Commons building on the evening of July 4th. Through volunteers, repairs were made quickly.
WW I Memorial
Don Jacobson relayed that the third public meeting is July 31 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the church.
The next MTNA meeting will be Wednesday, August 15 at 7 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church.
