Regular Meeting Minutes
June 20, 2007


Board members present: Mark Bartlett, Nadine Fiedler, Dave Hilts, Don Jacobson, Cathy Kuehnl, John Laursen, Paul Leistner, Justin Leonard, Bunny Marechal, Gayle Marechal, John McLaren, Nancy Norby, Stan Terpstra, Bruce Treat and Bing Wong

Board members absent: Cascade Anderson Geller and Clifford Carlson

Others present: Kathleen Brennan-Hunter of Metro, Wayne Dietz, Bella Donna, Colin Fisher, Barbara Grimala, Lois Heying, Heidi Kohne, Nancy LaPaglia, Jennifer Leonard, Robert Liberty of Metro, Amy Schuff, Steve Slusarski, Katy Steding

Bing Wong led introductions. Motion by Dave Hilts and second by Paul Leistner that the May meeting minutes be approved as amended. Motion passed. Bing Wong presented the treasurer’s report. Justin Leonard then showed up and we surprised him with a dessert potluck and gift cards, thanking him for his hard work serving as MTNA
President for ‘06-‘07.

Presentation

Metro
Robert Liberty and Kathleen Brennan-Hunter of Metro visited to speak on infill projects, the 2006 Bond measure and other issues about growth and livability in Portland.

Committee Reports

Land Use
Dave Hilts invited neighbors Steve Slusarski and Nancy LaPaglia to speak about their concerns about illegal tree cutting and lack of permits at a property near 73rd and
Yamhill.  Motion by Paul Leistner and second by Mark Bartlett that the MTNA write
letters to the appropriate agencies in support of the neighbors' concerns about the tree cutting. Motion passed.  Action item: Dave Hilts to write letters.

Neighbor Bella Donna also gave details about a neighborhood dispute near 76th and Stephens concerning vehicles being parked on lawns and possible illegal carports.  No action was taken at this time by the MTNA. 

Mt. Tabor Park Mediation/Public Policy Proposal
John Laursen reported on discussions with Portland Parks and Recreation over the disposition of part of Mt. Tabor Park.  The disposition meetings will be June 25, July 16 and August 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church at 54th and Belmont. 

SEUL
Paul Leistner invited everyone to Southeast Uplift’s (SEUL) ice cream social on July 2. SEUL will also hold their Board elections that night.

Old Business

Hawthorne Entryway Project
John Laursen provided news of the upcoming dedication of the bronze plaque at 50th/Hawthorne will occur on August 18th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Motion by Don
Jacobson and second by Stan Terpstra that the MTNA write a letter in support of
closing a nearby street for the celebration as well as chipping in some money in support of the dedication. Motion passed. Action item: John Laursen to write letter.

Tabor Commons
Paul Leistner announced that Café’ au Play is trying to get a temporary permit to a
coffee shop at Tabor Commons next to the Dairy Queen on Division/57th.

WW I Memorial
John Laursen updated the MTNA about the possible World War I memorial with the news that nothing much had happened since the May MTNA meeting.

New Business

Friends of Mt. Tabor Park
Nancy Norby invited everyone to the Friends annual meeting on August 14 in the Park.

Land Use Committee (Formation of)
Mark Bartlett proposed that the MTNA approve the formation of a public lands committee whose duties may include: researching land use activities that affect public lands; interacting and cooperating with other groups, including neighbor associations; reporting back and making recommendations to the MTNA board and membership. Discussion followed. Motion by John Laursen and second by Nancy Norby that such a committee be formed. Motion passed.

Surprise Event at Park
Nancy Norby reported that on June 16, Mt. Tabor Park was closed for filming without notice to either the MTNA or the Friends of Mt. Tabor Park. The film crew also made excessive noise, had illegally parked vehicles and caused disruption to regular park
users. Action item: Nancy to report back next meeting on status.

The next MTNA meeting will be Wednesday, July 18th at 7 p.m. also at the Presbyterian church.
