Announcements
The Mt. Tabor Park is having their
centennial celebration next month! Dawn
Smallman has volunteer sign-in sheets if you are
interested in helping out. Help is
especially needed on that Sunday. Mark Barlett
raised an issue about if Mt. Tabor Park is
actually a park according to city guidelines;
Nancy Norby will look into that issue before the
centennial.
Tom Leiner mentioned that the entryway has
been cleaned up, anonymously. He’s grateful, but
neither he nor anyone else knows who worked on
it.
Heidi Kohne announced an organ concert series
at Tabor Heights United Methodist Church. They
will be held on the third Sunday of each month
at 4pm through October. Heidi will be one of the
organists performing on the first concert, held
this Sunday, the 19th. A free-will
offering will be taken.
Nancy Norby asked those present if anyone was
going to be involved with the neighborhood block
party this weekend. It was unclear who all was
going to be at the party and parade.
Memorial Bench: Don Holden reported that
the bench will be installed next week, and
thanked the MTNA for their support. Jim
Blackwood said that he will be pushing for some
media coverage. He also said that a permit had
not been given for the bench, so one is being
pursued through Bureau of Developmental
Services.
Neighborhood Crime: Jenni Bernheisel, who
is our new Crime Prevention Officer, introduced
herself to the attendees, and mentioned some of
what her job entails. She said that she will
keep her office at 47th and Sandy, in
the firehouse there. She also tends the
Montavilla and South Tabor neighborhoods. Dawn
Smallman asked Jenni what crime statistics are
available for public perusal, especially with
specific areas; discussion followed that
included possibly finishing and enforcing the
good neighbor agreement with Hawthorne Avenue
businesses that was started a few years ago.
Officer Manougian reported that property
crimes continue to be the main issue, as usual.
So far there hasn’t been much of a problem of
sex/rape crimes. He gave us a report on the
surprise concert last night at Pioneer Square
and how that affected the police officers in the
Central and East precincts. He also reported
that police officers are aware of the fighting
and other problems happening at some of the bars
on upper Hawthorne. One tip he gave us: Don’t
leave windows open where thieves can get into
your home.
Parks Meeting: Dawn Smallman & Greg
Snider attended a Parks bureau public outreach
event on behalf of MTNA. Dawn & Greg shared with
MTNA a survey that was conducted by Park
Department about public views of the park
system. Dawn had told the parks’ representative
that what MTNA has been getting feedback about
from neighbors is the importance of the Mt.
Tabor’s peace and quiet. She also said that the
Park’s department is really paying attention to
the first item of the survey’s graph: parks
within a 15-minute walk from home.
Commissioner Nick Fish: Mark Bartlett
reported on a meeting he had with Nick Fish
about the city’s and Park’s policies on
land-selling and disposition. An answer has not
been provided yet by the commissioner.
TaborSpace: Parker reported on the
coffeeshop located at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian
Church, maintained by neighbors. He shared how
TaborSpace started and what it offers.
Committee Reports
SEUL
Paul reported that Anne Dufay has started her
job as the new Executive Director. He said that
SEUL is hoping to be more involved with city
issues.
Tabor Commons will be having a weeding party
this Sunday. Landscaping will be happening very
soon, all permitted with the city.
Friends of Mt.
Tabor Park:
Frank Gorshe reported that there are two more
concerts left in the Mt. Tabor concert series.
So far, they are making a little bit of money,
helped by the sale of pies at the events. He
also mentioned the upcoming centennial
celebration.
Frank mentioned that the issue of off-road
bicycling is still a problem, and it will be
brought up at their next meeting.
He also reported that Nancy was given the
honor of Friend of the Year.
Land Use
Stephanie reported on one Land-Use Review
Application: A radio frequency transmission
unit, to be fenced in at Division and 60th
(at Courtyard Plaza).
Stephanie wants to send a thank you letter to
Merkeley for offering support at the federal
level on LT2 issues; MSC Paul Leistner, Mark
Bartlett, to give her permission to write the
letter.
Stephanie has heard a few responses about the
noise rules. She said that she would like to
change the wording of MTNA’s noise policy, which
was presented and corrected at the meeting.
Motion: To adopt the new wording of Mt.
Tabor Neighborhood Association’s Noise Policy as
follows:
Mount Tabor Neighborhood Guidelines for
Granting Exceptions to the Park Bureau
Policy on Noise in Mount Tabor Park. Adopted
by the Board of the Mount Tabor Neighborhood
Association, Feb 2005, updated July 2009.
1. We generally support the current Park
Bureau policy, and will consider exceptions.
2. We will give preference to events that
are community-based.
3. No event-related noise should begin
before 12:00 noon.
4. All event-related noise should end by
8:30pm.
The overall time for event-related noise
should not exceed three hours.
MSC Dawn Smallman, Jim Blackwood.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30pm.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, August
19, 2009, at 7:00pm at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian
Church, located at SE 54th and
Belmont.
